Ways of being sure · Step 7 of 12
Deduction
Deduction does not count what happened. It reads what makes it happen.
You have: One record exists, from the front door. And two ways of being sure. Prophecy risks nothing and explains nothing. Induction risks something and explains nothing.
A different question
Induction asks what happened before. The sun rose yesterday. It rose this morning. So you expect it tomorrow.
Deduction asks something else. It does not count what happened. It looks at what makes it happen.
It begins, the Three Ways page says, “where induction cannot reach. At the structure that writes the pattern.”
So where do you start? Not from a count of mornings. From the one thing you cannot deny.
Start from the one record
You are reading this. That is a record: a distinction that has been made and persists. Heads, not tails. Ink, not pencil.
Try to deny it. Your denial is another record.
One record exists. And for a record to exist, four things must be true. They are the four conditions.
Symmetry. There must be two sides, the same. This and that. Think of a coin lying flat before anyone has looked at it. Heads and tails are both there. Neither is preferred.
Break. There must be a break. This, not that. Picture two jars of water, the same in every way. Nothing tells them apart. Now drop one grain of sand in the left jar. Now they can be told apart. The grain is the break.
Record. The break must hold. What happened cannot unhappen. You finished the last paragraph. You cannot unread it.
Constraint. The record must be somewhere, not everywhere. Here is not there. A record that was everywhere at once would be a record nowhere.
Symmetry. Break. Record. Constraint. S, B, R, C.
Nobody picked these four. The Interior says it plainly: “These are not chosen. They are forced by the existence of the record.”
Take one away
Here is how you check that word, forced. Take one condition away. See what is left.
Take away Symmetry. There are no two sides. Nothing can be told apart. No record is possible.
Take away the Break. Perfect balance. Nothing is written.
Take away Record. Things happen and leave no trace.
Take away Constraint. Records are everywhere at once. No place. No shape. No form.
Each time, the record you are reading right now could not exist. But it does exist. So all four hold.
That is deduction. From what cannot be denied, to what must be true.
Now the sun
Go back to tomorrow’s sunrise. This time, do not count mornings.
The Earth is turning. The turning is a record being written, right now.
By Record, what has turned has turned. It cannot be unwritten.
By Constraint, anything that could stop the turning by tomorrow must already be written somewhere today, within reach. Nothing is.
So tomorrow it rises.
“Not because it rose before. Because the structure that raises it is standing, and nothing within reach can stop it in time.”
The past sunrises are no longer what you stand on. You do not need them. You read the structure now, in the turning.
The sunrise you expect is the same one. What changes is your right to expect it. The Three Ways page puts it in two short lines: “Induction calls it a leap. Deduction calls it a reading.”
And the question induction could not touch is answered. Why is there a chain at all? You have just written the chain from the four conditions.
Real, and conditional
Deduction hands you necessity. Tomorrow does not only usually follow. It must follow.
But it is a particular kind of necessity. “Not necessity from nowhere. Conditional.”
Given the four conditions, and given that the Earth is turning, tomorrow follows. “It follows with force. The necessity is real. It is binding. But it depends on its condition.”
That condition is the seam. Name it, and the result is locked. The same naming shows exactly where it could fail. Show a record unwritten. Show the turning stopped by something that was nowhere within reach. Then the necessity is gone, at the place you named.
“That is the discipline in one line. The condition is the kill switch.”
Now compare prophecy. “A claim with no condition has nowhere to be cut.” A prophecy names no condition. So nothing can cut it, and it tells you nothing. Deduction names its condition. So it can be cut, and it tells you why.
The whole road, one step at a time
The same method runs through the whole of The 420 Code.
The Interior sets out its entire argument in nine steps. Step one: “This is undeniable. You are reading this. That is a record.” Step two: the four conditions are forced. Then physics follows from the four. Then awareness. Then ethics. Each step stands on the one before it.
Notebook I does the same for the four conditions themselves. Its proof is short. Records exist. Records require the four conditions. So reality meets the four conditions. The book says: “No step assumes the conclusion.” And then: “The proof is deductive.”
Is that going in a circle? The book answers in three words: “Not circular. Reflexive.”
Reflexive means it turns back on itself. To ask whether the four conditions hold, you must ask. Asking is a record. A record needs all four. “The proof is performed by anyone who attempts to deny it.”
Try it. Write the four conditions on a sheet of paper: Symmetry, Break, Record, Constraint. Cross out one. Under it, write what would be left. Do it for each of the four. Then open The Interior’s argument in nine steps. At each step, ask one question: does this follow from the one before? If you find a step that does not, you have found where to aim.
What you now know. Deduction starts from what cannot be denied and reads what must follow. From one record, four conditions: Symmetry, Break, Record, Constraint. From the four, tomorrow’s sunrise is read, not guessed. The necessity is real, it is conditional, and the condition is the kill switch.
Where it would die
2 kill switches
Deduction says where it would die. That is the whole point of it.
The sunrise:
“Show a record unwritten. Show the turning stopped by something that was nowhere within reach. Then the necessity is void. Cleanly, at the named place.”
Three Ways of Being Sure, Deduction
The four conditions. Notebook I calls them the axioms of the work, and fences them with two switches. Both are live.
KS-P.1 — Completeness of the axiom set. “Find the fifth axiom. Demonstrate that some conceptual precondition for records is not captured by {S, B, R, C} and requires an additional axiom that is not derivable from the four.” Status: LIVE — HARD.
Notebook I, Chapter 3 The Proof
KS-P.2 — Minimality of the axiom set. “Derive one axiom from the other three.” Status: LIVE — HARD.
Notebook I, Chapter 3 The Proof
In plain words. Find a fifth thing a record needs, that the four do not already give. Or show that one of the four comes free from the other three. Either one, and the proof of the four is cut at that place.

What does deduction look at that induction does not?
Answer
What makes the thing happen. The structure that writes the pattern, not the count of what happened before.
Name the four conditions. What goes wrong if you take away Record?
Answer
Symmetry, Break, Record, Constraint. Without Record, things happen and leave no trace, so no record could exist. But one does.
Why is a claim that names its condition stronger than a claim that names none?
Answer
The condition says exactly where it would fail, so it can be tested and cut. A claim with no condition has nowhere to be cut. That is a prophecy.
